Botnen, Geir (piano)
Geir Botnen (b.1959) is a direct descendant of the renowned fiddle makers Isak and Trond Botnen. Raised in Norheimsund with folk music in his blood, he early acquired an interest in Geir Tveitt's music. At a young age, the pianist played all of Tveitt's Fifty Folk Tunes from Hardanger on a double-album recording, and he has diligently performed Tveitt's music in Scandinavia, including the Risør Festival, as well as a number of tours in the US and the Far East.
Geir Botnen, who studied five years with Jiri Hlinka at the Bergen Conservatory of Music, is an all-round pianist with a broad, classical-romantic repertoire. The Bergen Philharmonic and the other orchestras have engaged him as soloist in performances of Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Franck and Poulenc. Furthermore, he is a gifted accompanist. For Simax he has recorded selections of Grieg's Folkeviser (folk songs) Opus 66 and Slåtter Opus 72 together with Reidun Horvei and Knut Hamre, and a CD with modern flute music in collaboration with Ingela Øien.
